Why I Think I'm Rapunzel

Every girl dreams of being a Disney princess. Well, at least I did.

And then, in 2010, Tangled premiered and I fell in love with a girl who I felt was a reflection of myself.

I ask many of my friends which Disney princess they think they would be and I always need reasons as to why they think so. I do not allow them to just say generic things like, "I'm Belle because I like to read" or "I'm Jasmine because I'm Indian". I like for them to have real concrete reasons as to why they think they are the Disney character.

And I have them for why I'm Rapunzel.

1. Appearance

Now, to say you are one of the Disney Princesses, you do not have to look like them, but this was a big deal for me. Out of all of the Disney Princesses, Rapunzel is the only one with green eyes, a feature I pride myself on because of how rare of an eye color it can be. She also is known for her glowing, golden hair and while my hair is a blonde-brown color, it does glow like the golden flower when in sunlight. Also because my hair is blonde-brown, it's an homage to her before and after hair colors in the movie.

She is also a rather short and petite Disney Princess. While I wouldn't call myself petite because of my curves, I am pretty short and so is my family, with the tallest girl being 5'5". (I'm 5'3")

2. Her Many Hobbies

Many Disney Princesses have 1-3 things they do and do well. For example, Cinderella was good at cooking and cleaning and sewing. Rapunzel comes in with her first song and shows her long list of hobbies she has accumulated over the past 18 years.

Out of her hobbies, I share 15 out of 24 of her hobbies, which is over 50% and some like pottery, ventriloquy and candle-making, seem a bit far-fetched. Of her hobbies in the first song, not including singing and dancing (which I also love), I share the following:

  1. Sweeping (I vacuum)

  2. Laundry

  3. Reading

  4. Painting

  5. Guitar (I play ukulele and cello and piano actually)

  6. Knitting (I knit hats and sometimes scarves)

  7. Cooking

  8. Puzzles

  9. Baking (I love making brownies, cookies and fudge!)

  10. Ballet (among other dance styles)

  11. Stretching/Yoga

  12. Sketching

  13. Climbing (I like climbing rocks and exploring)

  14. Sewing

  15. Brushing my hair

Now there are some others that I've done a few times, like paper mache and darts, I didn't include them on the list. While some things on there seem like anyone could do that, I have my rebuttal.

  • Brushing my hair is a feat in itself because of my extreme thickness and length of my hair.

  • Because of all my hair, I vacuum a LOT so it becomes a hobby.

So I'd say Rapunzel and I are pretty similar at this point.

3. Her Attitude

Rapunzel's attitude is pretty bubbly and happy. But she does care an awful lot about what others think, especially her mother. And she knows what she wants out of life and won't budge until she gets it.

I am a pretty happy person, not quite as bubbly, but I sure can be when having a great time. I care a bit too much about what my loved ones think and I've known what I've wanted to do since I was 10 years old and I'm am actively pursuing it, like my own floating lights.

4. Her Other Personality Traits

Rapunzel is known to also be trustworthy with her promises she makes and also persuasive and immune to boyish charms, like Flynn's smolder.

I consider myself to be very trustworthy and take Pinky Promises very seriously, like everyone should. I am also very persuasive. Not only do I bring a good argument with facts to back me up but I have been told I have a very sweet smile that has helped more than once. I also do not consider myself to be very taken with boys just because they're "cute" or "hot". To me, their personality and intelligence is what deters me or lures me in.

5. Her Relationship With Flynn/Eugene

Now I have a boyfriend, who I consider my own Flynn Rider, but not just because he's cute.

My boyfriend is charming, clever, charismatic and a trouble maker. He makes Flynn-Rider-type jokes constantly, so he is rather comedic. But he is also caring, loving, loyal and selfless, like Flynn later in the movie.

While my boyfriend seems a lot like Flynn, our relationship also reflects how much he and I are Flynn and Rapunzel, respectively. Their relationship doesn't start out too friendly but slowly they become good loyal friends to one another. It isn't until the talk at the fire where they develop feelings and it isn't until he boat ride where their relationship begins to become romantic.

This mirrors my relationship with my boyfriend greatly, as we started off as just acquaintances who kind of tolerated each other and slowly became very good friends who would talk through the night, much like the talk Rapunzel and Flynn have at the fire. We then went on a car ride (it's not a boat, but close) where feelings began developing and our relationship grew from there.

Also, Tangled is the first Disney movie my boyfriend watched with me and he continuously said: "It's us!"

Those are my top 5 reasons why I believe I'm Rapunzel. If you'd like to question me further on it, feel free to click the "Chat with Libby" bar in the right hand corner or go to the "Contact Live Libby" portion of the home page to send me a message!

I also look great in purple, love my hair in a braid and often like being barefoot.
